Digital to Physical
Anderson Ranch Arts Center presents Digital to Physical—a juried exhibition of 2D, 3D, and single-channel time-based work created using digital technology in concept and process. Associate Curator of Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art Kirsten Gerdes Stoltz juried the submittals and selected 17 artists to comprise the show.

The exhibition is on view from December 8, 2009–January 29, 2010 in the Patton-Malott and Gideon Gartner Galleries. Anderson Ranch hosts the opening reception Tuesday, December 8, from 5-7 pm; free and open to the public.

A diverse range of work and techniques are represented—from the use of processing to assemble 100,000+ data points, video that is an artistic visualization and sonification (direct translation of data to sound) of near real-time Arctic data, an artist that critically looks at Google as a translator and transporter of information, and a piece that incorporates programming to actively track information being sought on the internet. The exhibition demonstrates that artists are wielding technology to question, challenge and surprise our understanding of what art can be.

Juror Kirsten Gerdes Stoltz states, “In this exhibition you will see a range of artistic practices. I was interested in representing a varying array of ideas exploring a contemporary definition of digital. Today, digital manipulation of the photographic image seems antiquated which speaks volumes to how advanced this medium has become. Artists now interpret digital data, invent computer code, manipulate sound and remix imagery to the point of virtual clarity. Experimentation is key to successful art making, this exhibition highlights artists who are deeply committed to furthering digital media.”

The exhibition includes works by the following artists: Jacques Abelman, Christo Allegra, Alyssa Rae Barber, Denise Bookwalter, Bobby Campbell, Robert David, Amber Frid-Jimenez, Jacob Galle, Antonio Martinez, Portia Munson, A. Jason Nein, Andrea Polli, Nigel Poor, Tim Schwartz, Michael Shaw, Rick Silva, Millee Tibbs and Anne E. Wilson.

The Anderson Ranch Patton-Malott and Gideon Gartner Galleries feature exhibitions that showcase the Ranch’s long history of creating and exhibiting dynamic and ground-breaking work.
