Metal Furniture (S1515)
| Full Course Title | Metal Furniture (S1515) |
| Dates | Sep 13, 2010 - Sep 24, 2010 |
| Concept | Engage in an imaginative and physical experience with the powerful domestic landscape of furniture objects. We explore work that falls between function and sculpture, between practical construction and theoretical ideas. This is a master class where students gain skills with the material and observe the faculty working in the studio. |
| Media & Techniques | We introduce metalworking techniques from the hand hammer and tig welder to the slip roller. We use drafting, scale modeling, pattern making, welding, jig making, forging and abrasives for metal. |
| Activities | Class time is split between idea building (discussion, drawing and critique) and physical building (technical demonstration, design problem-solving and studio work time). We discuss proportion, ergonomics, history, material experimentation and design theory. We have technical demonstrations, critiques and slide presentations that delve into the ideas of personal and private, intimacy and performance, ergonomics and play, all exploring the nature of how furniture affects us. |
