Our flexible itinerary includes visiting hidden beaches and spectacular cliffs along the shore, peaceful lakes hidden away in National Forests, mysterious ruins left behind by the ancient cultures, and vibrant villages where the Irish heritage comes alive. Each location presents the opportunity for inspired image making. We use digital cameras to capture the rugged landscape, lively culture and rich history of county Kerry in Southern Ireland. Our group will have daily field trips to shooting on location at various times of day. We discuss making the best use of digital photography equipment, including how to make a good exposure, various shooting techniques and using a tripod, the principles of good composition and capturing a panorama. When not shooting, we gather as a group to discuss the successes and failures of our image making, producing the digital panorama and how to use raw capture with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to digitally produce the image you see in your mind. ...more

| Capturing Provence This workshop takes place in the heart of southern France where, for generations, masters have created iconic art works. From medieval times to the present, artists such as Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso have been drawn to the beauty of this region. Aix is also known as "Little Paris," and is famous for its summer arts festival, thriving cafe scene and its many restaurants, boutiques, museums and galleries. This region is a delight for enthusiasts of architecture, with great examples of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and 18th-century representations. With its historic landmarks, grand vistas and narrow winding streets, Aix is a photographer's paradise. Join Anderson Ranch Artistic Director Andrea Wallace and French tour guide Christine Khorsand for a week of personalized photography instruction as we tour southern France. During your visit and personal journey through this region, you are encouraged to produce your own series of creative images through guided observations and personal coaching. With Aix as our base, we have daily excursions to the surrounding towns of Avignon and the nearby Pont du Gard (2nd-century AD Roman aqueduct), the Luberon hilltop medieval villages of Bonnieux and Roussillon, Marseille, Nice (Matisse museum), Arles, as well as making unique visits to photographic and art exhibits in museums in Antibes (Picasso Museum) and Mougins. We strike a balance between fieldwork, critiques, new technical and aesthetic material, and the freedom to explore and photograph the region. This workshop focuses on gaining more creative control of your digital camera, understanding the principles of composition, and moving beyond the cliche in photography. While we have a daily curriculum, the most valuable part of the workshop is having plenty of hands-on time each day to put what you are learning into practice. Also important is having time to share your process and images with other participants. You apply what you are discovering in a gorgeous, stimulating and inspirational setting with different venues to photograph each day. The class includes discussions of the great traditions of French photography, from its invention by Daguerre and Niepce to the groundbreaking contributions of Atget and Cartier-Bresson. Some evening sessions are for sharing the photographs of the day and discussing together what we've learned. The emphasis is on providing a comfortable learning environment, having fun, and enjoying this beautiful area of southern France! This workshop is geared to all beginning and intermediate digital camera enthusiasts interested in gaining more confidence and more creative control of the features of a digital camera and improving photography skills. We stay in the centrally located Hotel Adagio, in easy walking distance from the old town, cafes, restaurant, market and shopping. http://www.adagio-city.com/gb/hotel-6796-adagio-aix-en-provence-centre/room.shtml ...more

| Creating Volumetric Forms from Flat Material To transform images from the mind's eye into tangible sculptures-is easy with help. Working with flat, rigid sheet material to 'skin' volumetric forms is indeed a challenge. Jonathan has developed techniques to overcome the problem by substituting cardboard for steel. Using double-walled corrugated cardboard and hot glue as the basic building materials, students make models, incorporating either basic geometric principles or free-form organic abstractions. Students are invited to think about shapes and forms that hold particular interest and bring these ideas to the workshop. The technique enables the students to transform images from the mind's eye into tangible sculptures. ...more
