Sarah Stacke is a photojournalist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work looks at places whose borders were created during periods of colonization. Often spending time with a community over the course of months or years, she explores the intersection of culture and memory and the ways relationships to the land and its boundaries shape identity. This takes her to tribal nations in North Carolina, South Dakota and Minnesota, and also Manenberg, South Africa.

Sarah’s personal and assignment work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, BuzzFeed, STAT, Washington Post and Open Society Foundations, among others. From 2017-2019, Sarah curated the Photo of the Day section for Photo District News.

Sarah received a master’s degree from Duke University tailored to analyze the history of photographic representations. She’s an adjunct faculty member at the International Center of Photography and CUNY Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, and the author of the award-winning book, Photos Day or Night: The Archive of Hugh Mangum (Red Hook Editions, 2018).

With the schools closed and the city on lockdown because of the coronavirus outbreak, my first-grade son is experiencing big changes. Our apartment in Brooklyn, New York, has become a makeshift classroom and foster home to the science classroom frog. The parks are off limits and he only talks to his friends through screens. He’s working out ways to bond with his little
brother.

To process these changes and ease tension from homeschooling tasks, we collaborate on portraits about our pandemic experience. They serve as a record of this period in our family’s history –– one that will always be the bookmark between before and after –– for him, and us, to remember the days we spent at home together in this brew of love and fear.
