Meet Artist-in-Residence Marie-Lou Desmeules

November 21, 2017

Tell us about your background.
I was born & raised in Quebec. I lived in Berlin for a decade where I started my career as a painter.  I currently live in Valencia, Spain.

How did you find out about the Anderson Ranch Arts Center?
I met an artist, Christian Rex Van Minnen, in New York and he deeply recommended the Ranch as an artistic life changing experience.

What is your favorite part about the Anderson Ranch so far?
The 24 hour studios, the quality of the equipment, the exchange between residents, and the fact we all have a totally different visions & body of work, the wonderful location, the food and the supportive staff.  I believe this residency will follow me for many years to come.

What inspires you to create art?
I am fascinated by the power of the image in the public eye, identity & what defines beauty.  When it comes to the performance, my main inspiration comes from music.  I prepare a soundtrack for each performance, trying to provoke various emotional states and let my feelings translate into strokes of paints.

How has your work evolved?
At first, I was fascinated with the illusion of 3D into a 2D image.  Today, 10 years later, I call it “Crossmetic Surgery”.  I use paint, hair & packaging leftovers to turn people into living sculptures of twisted likenesses of celebrities, world leaders & modern archetypes.
