These workshops provide powerful tools for self-expression in the hands of creative faculty, and present dynamic opportunities to merge the newest visual arts technologies with traditional processes.

A variety of workshops use the digital fabrication technology in the FabLab and throughout multiple studios on the Ranch campus. Explore the possibilities with our state-of-the-art equipment, including 4-axis CNC (computer-numerically-controlled) routers, Formlabs SLA Resin 3-D Printers, Prusa MK3S FDM 3-D printers, Epilog laser cutters, 3-D scanners, a Roland UV printer and vinyl cutter, and vacuum formers. Digital fabrication equipment is powered by Rhinoceros 3D, Adobe Creative Cloud, Autodesk Fusion 360 and Meshmixer, a variety of 3-D printing slicing softwares, and more.

In the Round: CNC Carving

Delve into the world of computer numerically controlled (CNC) furniture part making in this introductory fabrication workshop. Technology has propelled contemporary design in countless unexpected ways throughout history, and this class considers the modernization of traditional furniture design across cultures, Participants are encouraged to explore their unique artistic voice as they design furniture parts such as legs, backrests, stretchers, and decorative elements on paper and then translate it into Rhinoceros 3D through basic 2D CAD (computer-aided design) followed by 3D modeling. Students delve into best practices in material preparation, CNC hold down methods, tools and supply, etc. Final projects are cut as double sided 3D parts on the CNC routers and then finished by hand.

Photographic Collage and Combined Digital Techniques

Participants in this class expand their collage techniques with digital and traditional processes to create simple and layered composite images and constructions, combining painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, wood, paper, and found or fabricated imagery to tell their stories. Students use the laser cutter to cut or engrave paper or other materials and push their imagery further by utilizing the capabilities of the UV printer. Demonstrations include collage, non-toxic resin, laser engraved imagery and cutting, and transfer techniques.

Woodcut and Monoprint with Digital Applications

This rigorous, engaging printmaking workshop combines monoprint and woodcut processes with a digital component. Students incorporate laser-cut stencils and wood blocks with painterly and carved marks to create images. The class begins with observational studies from the natural world and explores multiple plate monotype methods. Woodcut techniques, including laser cut blocks, are then added to layer transparent and opaque colors. Students make both editioned and unique prints, alternating between structure and improvisation. This back-and-forth serves as the format for the course, combining multiple matrices in many ways.
