VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
Abstraction, Automatism and Figuration
Jennifer Coates
Tuition $595
Code D34W06-21
In this dynamic painting workshop open to all levels online, participants explore the rich overlap between figuration and abstraction with a particular focus on materiality. A look at the history of gestures and automatism in paint gives some historical context on how these elements function in relation to figures, objects and landscapes. Students discover how perceptually grounded forms can be modified, enhanced or productively undermined by abstraction. The cultural history of color and what kinds of meaning color can produce are also a focus. Students can choose to work from life, photographic sources or imagination. This workshop meets via Zoom Video Conferencing software (download free from Zoom.com). An Anderson Ranch staff member co-teaches the class and coordinates the online platform. Further details will be emailed to registrants.
