Concept:

PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIRED. Explore the strengths and limitations of your current work and practice in order to re-energize them in this one-week, advanced painting and critique workshop—the last in this three-year mentored study program. Students have a work space and all approaches are welcome. Guidance with making choices and expanding skills and resources supports artists’ artistic trajectories. The workshop is equally divided between critiques and working sessions with emphasis on investigating issues that come up during discussions. Participants should expect to work outside of workshop hours. This workshop is for artists who have considerable painting experience, especially those familiar with contemporary practices and theory.

Media & Techniques:

You are welcome to use materials of your choice. Typically, students use paint, charcoal or enamel on canvas, but there are no limitations. Feel free to bring works already in progress or start with new work during the workshop. Drying time and size should be considered in relation to shipping.

Activities:

This workshop is primarily focused on studio time supported by slide presentations, discussions and critiques driven by instructor questions and students’ paintings. Readings and short daily writing assignments are also part of the course work.

Faculty:

Enrique Martínez Celaya’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum der bildenden Kunste in Leipzig, Germany. Among other awards, he has received the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for Visual Arts.

Portfolio Review Required:

Thank you for inquiring about our Level IV Advanced Mentored Study Program with Enrique Martínez Celaya at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.  Since a portfolio review is required, the instructions on how to submit your portfolio are provided here. Acceptance is not a first-come/first-served basis; rather, it will be based upon selection from an applicant pool. Mr. Martínez Celaya will personally review the submissions and make the selections.

In order to conduct the required portfolio review, Mr. Martínez Celaya will need to see digital images of your work in one single PDF (as opposed to individual JPG attachments) sent directly to Anderson Studio Coordinator, Josh Meier, via email – jmeier@andersonranch.org. Please include 10 images of 10 works. Additionally, please include an image identification list that includes: title, media, dimensions and year. Please also include an artist statement addressing the images you send, as well as a resume/cv that includes your phone number. Again, these materials must be submitted as a single PDF (less than 10 MB) to be considered.

Please include “Martínez Celaya Advanced Portfolio Review” in the subject line of your email to Josh Meier. Submissions that do not follow the requested directions will not be reviewed.

To be considered, Josh Meier must receive portfolios by Friday, Feb. 3, 2017. We will email you regarding your status on or before Friday, February 24. If you are accepted, a deposit of $500 will be required within one week of notification of acceptance to hold your place. Housing will be assigned on a space available basis upon enrollment.

Thank you for your interest in the Advanced Mentored Study Program. Please feel free to contact Artistic Director, Andrea Wallace, with any questions at awallace@andersonranch.org or (970) 923-3181, ext. 233. Please do not contact Mr. Martínez Celaya or his studio directly.
