Engage in critical group dialogues and individual critiques to hone the fundamental aspects of your work and deepen your understanding of contemporary art practice. In this workshop that focuses on mixed media and installation, you produce studio work at your own pace, pausing for daily discussion with the instructor and your peers. Topics are in-depth and cover a wide-ranging scope, including technique, concept and approach. Students are expected to work independently and to set their own studio goals for the week. We strongly encourage a broad interpretation of painting for this workshop, and welcome artists working in installation and incorporating 3-D elements into their paintings.

Media & Techniques:

Students choose their own media and techniques to create their work in the studio. This class is also open to painters who are exploring installation, sculptural elements and broader interpretations of the medium. Students should come to class prepared with sketches of ideas and a presentation of their current work.

We work in the studio throughout the day. Discussions and studio visits take place on a daily basis. You are expected to have a rigorous studio practice and work the entire class time.

Shinique Smith is known for her monumental painting, sculpture and installation works of bundled fabric, collage and gestural calligraphic script. Her work has been featured in exhibitions and collections of prestigious venues such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Denver Art Museum, LACMA, MOMA/PS1, MFA Boston, The Frist Center, the Kemper Museum and the Whitney Museum, among others.
