Concept:

This workshop demonstrates the use of clay solid building techniques for creating animal sculpture. Instructor demonstrations include planning animal sculptures, creating maquettes, and constructing armatures. Complexities of animal anatomy, proportions, and gesture will be discussed along with methods for creating expressive features. Tools and techniques for hollowing and reassembly are demonstrated along with a variety of animal textures. Hand building and slab building are used to create added elements such as clothing, fabric, saddles or objects that provide different contexts for animal sculpture. Participants will also make silicone texture mats and glaze tests for sculpture.

Faculty:

Ariel Bowman received her MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida. She is currently an adjunct instructor in ceramics, and her work has been collected by the Belger Arts Center, the Florida Museum of Natural History, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.
