Low-light techniques open up a new world of nature photography, enabling the artist to explore familiar landscapes at unfamiliar times—when they are quieter and more enigmatic. Students learn approaches to capture artful outdoor images from sunset through sunrise. The course starts with fundamentals, including manual exposure and focus. As the evening progresses, the workshop covers how to photograph star trails, the Milky Way, light painting, as well as terrestrial subjects illuminated by only the moon and stars.

Digital cameras capable of manual operation, including SLRs and mirrorless, tripods.

Jeremy Swanson received his MFA from the University of Illinois. He photographs for the Aspen Skiing Company to capture images that tell the story of Aspen and Snowmass. His work has been published in National Geographic, Outside, Travel and Leisure, and Ski Magazine.
