Concept:

Design and create a harmonious, elegant box with quiet beauty. Students explore the fundamentals of woodworking for good design and good proportions. This workshop presents construction strategies and techniques to create beautiful boxes. Participants master a limited set of design skills that can be used for multiple woodworking projects in the future.

Media & Techniques:

Students learn how to properly choose rough lumber and practice safe milling procedures. Glue up procedures are introduced, as well as how to resaw rough lumber and cut miter joints.

Activities:

There are reviews of drawing techniques and design principles. Students learn about finishing applications such as milk paint, shellac and the use of fabric as a surface.

Faculty:

Matt Kenney is a professional box and furniture maker and is the author of 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks. Matt has written numerous articles about furniture and box-making, has been featured in instructional videos and was a cohost on the popular “Shop Talk Live” podcast. He was the former senior editor at Fine Woodworking Magazine.
