Engage with the past while you immerse yourself in the present in a workshop that focuses on the practice of drawing and painting using sumi ink and brush on paper. We take a contemporary and experimental approach to sumi ink drawing while referencing traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy. We work from the intersection of historical and contemporary while considering brush marks and lines to be descriptive, meditative, intuitive, narrative, contemplative, introspective and expressive. Participants are encouraged to come with an open mind and experimental spirit – the only expectation is to be present within the process.
Media & Techniques:
We work with sumi ink, a variety of brushes and an array of papers. We carefully examine the nature, properties and interaction of these three materials.
We begin by exploring simple mark making, working from the book The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. Each day, we engage in conversations and demonstrations. We work both silently alone and together as a group.
