Get ready to get rigorous in a painting workshop designed to make you sweat. Making a painting a day – and sometimes two -we focus on the basics of oil painting and simplify complex and sometimes daunting elements like color and light. Working observationally from still lifes, a model and the landscape, students learn to achieve a convincing sense of form and space. We examine color mixing, conceptualizing our visual experience, and effectively handling paint and brushwork. You walk away from this workshop with plenty of new paintings and valuable new skills and experience.
Media & Techniques:
Working from observation in oil paint, students experiment with both direct and indirect painting techniques such as alla-prima painting, glazing, scumbling and under-painting. We place particular focus on color mixing, applying paint and painting quickly while working from life.
We make one or more paintings per day, focusing on different aspects of observational painting such as tone and color. Every project is introduced with a demonstration, and working time involves continuous individual hands-on instruction.
