Build your confidence and your skillset with a solid knowledge of basic woodworking techniques in this hands-on course. Learn important aspects of the craft, such as safely choosing the right wood, the right tools and the right joints. Explore the fundamentals of good design and personal expression in woodworking. Students are guided through a variety of traditional layout and building processes while making a small-scale project. Whether you have no experience in woodworking or you have been away from the wood shop for a while, you walk away from this workshop inspired to tackle new challenges.

Media & Techniques:

Working with kiln-dried lumber, we go over proper use of hand and power tools. Techniques include necessary joints used in the right procedure, alternative clamping methods and finishing applications with paints.


Technical demonstrations and skill-building exercises help you choose the right joint and the right wood in the right place, producing the best results. Hands-on practice builds confidence in the wood shop.


Mark Tan studied furniture design and woodworking in the crafts and design program at Sheridan College in Toronto, Ontario. He is the Studio Coordinator for Furniture Design & Woodworking at Anderson Ranch and has exhibited work in Canada and the U.S.
