Combine your passion for drawing and painting with traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy in this one-of-a-kind workshop. Using sumi ink and brush on paper while referencing traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy, we take a contemporary and experimental approach to sumi ink drawing. We engage with the past as well as immerse ourselves in the present, while considering brush marks and lines to be descriptive, meditative, intuitive, narrative, contemplative, introspective and expressive. Students are encouraged to come with an open mind and experimental spirit—the only expectation is being present within the process.
Media & Techniques:
We use sumi ink, a variety of brushes and an array of papers in this workshop. We carefully examine the nature, properties and interaction of these three materials.
We begin by exploring simple mark-making and working from The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. Each day, we engage in conversations and demonstrations. We work both silently alone and together.
