Building a chair of this complexity is a rare and exciting opportunity. Students craft an elegant and intriguing piece of furniture by exploring the art of fine woodworking. This workshop lays out how to design and build a sculpted seat rocking chair. Participants develop an understanding for aesthetic and functional elements of a rocking chair through this hands-on experience.

Media & Techniques:

Working with kiln-dried lumber, students review safe milling procedures and proper use of hand and power tools. Students also use Sam Maloof-inspired joinery and learn new construction techniques including layout, shaping, function and wood selection.

Each day is divided into technical demonstrations that cover the essential processes of furniture making. Participants become well-versed in woodworking through daily group discussions and construction methods.
