Unleash your imagination while containing your art in this fun and informative course that guides you through the techniques necessary to create a variety of wood boxes. Students use the lathe, the bandsaw and carving tools while exploring methods of spindle turning and offset turning. We discuss the instructor’s unique strategies of creative problem solving to develop an original idea using her signature five-column chart. Walk away with your own hand crafted containers and an excellent foundation in woodturning.
Media & Techniques:
All turning is done between centers. We cover safe turning techniques, tool usage and design ideas. Students learn offset turning, working off of the lathe, and explore finishing applications.
Demonstrations and project development take place throughout the week. Group discussions and individual work time are provided for creating turned objects.
Beth Ireland holds an M.F.A. in sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has been running her company, Beth Ireland Woodworking, since 1983. Her business provides woodworking with a specialization in architectural and artistic woodturning. She has been involved in the traveling art/craft project Turning Around America since 2010. She also teaches the three-month Professional Woodturning Intensive at The Center For Furniture Craftsmanship. She lives and works in Roslindale, Mass.
