In September 2009, Anderson Ranch Arts Center issued a call for entries for a winter 2010 solo exhibition in the Anderson Ranch Gideon Gartner Gallery. Through a juried selection process, ceramic artist Lea Zoltowski was awarded the solo exhibition. The show titled, Scruples, will be on view from February 9 – March 2, 2010; opening reception will be held on February 9, 5-7 pm.
The Anderson Ranch Gideon Gartner Gallery showcases experimental and site-specific artwork. Each exhibition will feature a single artist and will showcase the Ranch’s long history of creating and exhibiting dynamic and ground-breaking work.
Scruple- n., is defined as “an uneasy feeling arising from conscience or principle that tends to hinder action.” Scruples will consist of several freestanding, large-scale sculptures along with several wall-mounted sculptures. Lea’s work invites and encourages viewer interaction via both direct and indirect suggestions. In describing her approach Lea explains, “I utilize ceramics, cast edibles, leather, and spandex to question the passive spectatorship of art and by extension media and life. Real and implied interactions to my art work include smelling, tasting, biting into, looking deeply into or staring, picking up and using, and winning to take with you as a souvenir. ‘Viewing’ my work necessarily destroys, consumes, and subverts viewing expectations and passive complacency.”
Lea Zoltowski is originally from Pennsylvania. She received her BFA in Ceramics from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred, NY, 1997-2001 and her MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University, Athens, OH, 2003-2006. She was an Artist-in-Residence and Instructor at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, ME, 2001-2002, and Artist-in-Residence and Instructor at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, 2002-2003. Lea has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally and has pieces in collections in China and England. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Montana State University, Billings, MT, 2006-present. www.leazoltowski.com
