SKILL LEVEL: Open to all

CONCEPT: This one-week workshop is designed for the young artist wanting to pursue a path in the ceramic arts. Each participant is responsible for choosing a direction to investigate through sculptural or functional forms, on the wheel, handbuilt or a combination of both. Guided by the Anderson Ranch ceramic staff, each participant is exposed to many young artists pursuing a career in the arts. This workshop is for the young driven artist. Students are expected to participate fully.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use red earthenware clay with slips, under glazes, low-fire glazes, drawing on paper.

ACTIVITIES: We learn through daily demonstrations that include wheel throwing, handbuilding, slip and glaze applications, daily individual and group discussions. Evening studio hours available.

FACULTY: Ralph Scala is the ceramics Studio Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. He received his B.A. in painting and sculpture from Evergreen College in 1995. He served as Studio Director at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago and Studio Director at Santa Fe Clay from 2000 to 2005.
