Visiting Artist Bethany Collins
Nov 12 - Nov 16, 2026
Bethany Collins’s (b.1984) multidisciplinary, conceptual practice examines the relationship between race and language, illuminating America’s past and offering insight into the development of national identities. Drawing on a wide variety of historical documents, Collins erases, obscures, excerpts, and rewrites portions of text to bring to the fore issues revolving around race, power, and histories of violence.
Collins’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including At Sea, Seattle Art Museum, WA (2024) and Accord, Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, AL (2024), among others. Her work is represented in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; Birmingham Museum of Art, AL; Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, IL; Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY; The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, among others. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including the 3Arts Next Level Visual Arts Award (2024); Pardon Prize (2024), and the Gwendolyn Knight & Jacob Lawrence Prize (2023), among others. Collins is also represented by PATRON, Chicago, IL.
The Visiting Artists program is a core part of the Anderson Ranch Arts Center experience, welcoming contemporary artists across disciplines to work on campus through residencies and special projects. Artists receive dedicated time, space, and technical support to develop new work and advance their practice. Visiting artists engage with students and residents through studio visits, critiques, and public lectures, creating a meaningful exchange that enriches the Ranch community and the broader public.
