The Art of Scagliola: An Introduction to Colorful Italian Plaster Sculpture
Andrew Wilhelm
Tuition $1,250
Code S1210-26
Scagliola is a centuries-old technique for simulating marble and other stones, traditionally used in architecture and decorative objects. By combining fine plaster with pigments and special binders, artists can create richly colored, veined surfaces that mimic natural stone with remarkable depth and luminosity. In this workshop, students learn the full process of scagliola, including mixing plaster with pigments to achieve desired hues, preparing molds, casting, and polishing the finished pieces to a high sheen. Participants explore techniques for layering colors, creating intricate veining patterns, and experimenting with texture and translucency. Through hands-on practice, students gain both technical mastery and an understanding of how this historic craft can be applied in contemporary sculptural and decorative work.
