Sachiko Akiyama

Sachiko Akiyama received her MFA in sculpture at Boston University and continued her studies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Akiyama lives and works in Portsmouth, NH, where her proximity to the ocean, woods, and wildlife has deepened her connections to the natural themes prevalent in her work. Akiyama has exhibited work nationally, and has been granted awards including a Joan Mitchell Fellowship and an Artist Resource Trust Grant.

This inventive and exciting workshop, open to woodworking students of all levels, introduces participants to hand tool carving, power carving, and machine use. Through creating a wood sculpture of an animal form, students explore an array of carving techniques while considering surface detail, form, gesture, and balance.
