Participants are encouraged to explore unconventional materials and experimental image-building processes that can complement traditional mokuhanga. Through demonstrations, discussions, and studio experimentation, students investigate how this non-toxic and press-free process continues to evolve as a dynamic form of creative expression, connecting tradition and innovation while offering endless possibilities for artists.

In this class, participants capture not only what they see using watercolor, but also personal responses as they paint form, line, shape, and work in color. One day of the workshop is spent on color theory and mixing. We start by painting cave-style murals like early humans, then try our hands at clay tablets inspired by ancient Mesopotamia. We design pottery like the Greeks and Romans, decorate fancy letters like medieval artists, and make bright “stained-glass” collages that glow with color. Moving forward in time, we splash paint like the Impressionists, create bold pop art, and dream up what art might look like in the future! By the end of the week, every child has created a “time capsule” of their own amazing creations—celebrating creativity from the past, present, and beyond!
