African Bead Safari

Jul 18 - 22, 2022

9AM-3PM

Concept

Pack your imagination and join us on a bead safari to Africa! Students “visit” the Zulu, Ndebele, and Xhosa peoples of South Africa and the Samburu of Kenya to learn some of their unusual bead-weaving techniques. These techniques are then applied to make colorful earrings, bracelets, necklaces and vessels using seed beads, wire, needle and thread. Pictures and examples of authentic African beadwork nurture inspiration as participants choose from a wide variety of colorful beads to make their own fun and unique projects.

Her book, Beading – the Creative Spirit, was published by SkyLight Paths in 2009.

Lodging & Meals

Anderson Ranch closely follows guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Colorado and the Pitkin County Health Department. In order to operate safely during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson Ranch has made significant modifications to our housing and meal offerings.

Beginning February 2023, Anderson Ranch will no longer require proof of Covid-19 vaccination for studio and artistic program participants. For your own safety as well as the safety of our community, we highly encourage all program participants to be up to date with their vaccinations for COVID-19 as well as the flu vaccine. We also encourage you to carry health and travelers insurance.

We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritizes the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.

Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

COVID-19 Safety Plan

Anderson Ranch is closely following local and national health and safety guidance. At this time, Anderson Ranch visitors and public program and event participants are not required to show proof of vaccination. Studio and artistic program participants ages 13 and up will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination.
Studio and artistic program participants are required to show proof that they have received the complete Covid-19 vaccine (i.e., two weeks have passed after receiving the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer MRNA vaccines or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Additionally, if six months have passed since completing the Moderna or Pfizer series or two months have passed since receiving the J & J vaccine, then a booster is also required. Ideally the booster would have been administered at least two weeks prior to coming to Anderson Ranch. Click here for additional health and safety information.

Brrr! In this three-day workshop, create all things inspired by snow falling, the holiday season and the beginning of wintertime! We use nature and the changing seasons around us for inspiration. Together we create snow globes, polar bear masks, snow covered pine cone owls, sparkly snowflakes and much more! Art Breaks are an exciting new program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center for kids ages 7-10. They are scheduled to complement breaks in the elementary school calendar throughout the year. Each Art Break has its own theme as it relates to the changing of the seasons and the world around us. Various artistic mediums will be incorporated including ceramics, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Kids will have a safe and inspiring environment to participate in hands-on creative problem-solving activities. They will be encouraged to recognize the arts as a lifelong learning experience as well as an integral part of the past and the future. Art Breaks will also feature special tours of the Anderson Ranch artistic studios for a peek inside the work of Visiting Artists and Studio Coordinators. Drop off and pick up will take place at the Evelyn and Martin Siegel Children’s Building, just inside the main Anderson Ranch entrance. Children should come prepared with a snack, lunch and water bottle, as well as appropriate apparel for a full day of art-making.
