Will of the Wisp is an exploration of the philosophy and challenges of American artist James Surls. The film offers a glimpse into the artist’s mindset and process as he creates artwork from a massive fallen cottonwood tree at age 81 while navigating the flu.
Following the screening will be a Q+A.

James Surls
James Surls is an internationally recognized artist, widely known for his monumental sculptures, drawings, and prints. He utilizes symbolism, pattern, and rhythm to illustrate his reverence for the natural and spiritual worlds. Surls’ works are in public, private, and museum collections throughout the world, including: the Centro Cultural Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City; the country of Singapore; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY.

Garrett Creamer
Garrett Creamer is a filmmaker and artist whose work explores the human experience through grounded, emotionally driven storytelling. With roots in action sports and outdoor culture, his practice spans documentaries, commercials, and print, often focused on the deeper reasons behind why people do what they do. He’s drawn to stories and objects—that last.
