Bari Ziperstein
Over the past 20 years, Bari Ziperstein has developed a mastery of ceramics that allows her to push the limits of scale, experiment with color and finish, and use the shapes and surfaces of her sculptures to tell stories and convey ideas. Her work is materially experimental but conceptual and research- based at its core. Transmuting the forms of Brutalist architecture and patterns of Soviet-era textiles and design into discrete sculptures and wall works in ceramic, Ziperstein’s works are heavily detailed with intricate surfaces, raucous colors, and complex structures. Her objects and sculptural tableaux reflect her interest in the political dimensions of capitalist economies and challenge the construction of desire and aspiration in contemporary American culture through a historical lens. Bari Ziperstein, b. 1978, Chicago, lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from CalArts in 2004 and her BFA from Ohio University in 2000. Institutional solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at Bethel University, Minneapolis, MN (2018); Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design, Santa Barbara, CA (2017); Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art at Chaffey College, Rancho Cucamonga, CA (2010); Long Beach City College Project Space, Long Beach, CA (2009); The Harris Art Gallery, University of La Verne, La Verne, CA (2007); and the San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco, CA (2005). In addition to Vielmetter Los Angeles, Ziperstein is represented by Charles Moffett Gallery, New York, NY, which presented a solo exhibition dedicated to the artist in 2023. In summer 2023, her work will be featured in Clay Pop: Part Two at Deitch Projects, Los Angeles, CA; and in fall 2023, Ziperstein will be the subject of a solo exhibition at Nina Johnson Gallery, Miami, FL
