CONCEPT: Explore the art of experimental printmaking through immersion. This course explores experimental printmaking with an emphasis on shaped plates, pattern and layering of imagery. Students are immersed in this mix to create a unique series of layered and lyrical prints that defy a beginning or end point. This workshop encourages open-ended exploration and improvisation with various printmaking media.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students explore monoprint, drypoint on plastic plates, collagraph, stencil and direct printing techniques. Plate-making and printing demonstrations occur daily with an emphasis on traditional as well as non-traditional possibilities. The workshop also explores advanced color mixing, layering of imagery and transparency in inks.
ACTIVITIES: We begin with studio demonstrations of distinct printmaking techniques: additive and reductive monoprint, drypoint, stencil techniques, collagraph, and direct printing techniques, color mixing, transparency and printing in layers. Daily class time includes studio demonstrations, time for experimenting and time for individual focused exploration with instructor support. Group discussions are held during the second half of the week.
FACULTY: Laura Berman is a full Professor at the Kansas City Art Institute, where she has taught in the Printmaking Department since 2002. She received her B.F.A. from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and her M.F.A. from Tulane University.
