Developing Spatial Relationships in Painting: Form and Content

Concept
Painters consider the ways in which to magnify space and depth in their paintings through various prompts and new ways of thinking about the steps of building a painting. The class embarks on the creation of dioramas as a first step, then moves to painting directly from models to be able to envision the three-dimensional into two dimensions while examining color, contrast, figure/ground, and many more formal elements that contribute to the creation of deep space. Content is also emphasized as a paramount concern as students examine their intentions and merge form and meaning.

Dominic Chambers
Dominic Chambers creates large-scale paintings that challenge existing depictions of Black bodies in mainstream American culture. He draws inspiration from literature, especially Magical Realism and the writing of W.E.B. Du Bois. Chambers’ work is in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Crocker Art Museum, LACMA, and many other museums and private collections.

Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Required Tools and Supplies
- Brushes of choice**
- Canvas (stretched, unstretched, or panel), pre-primed, size of choice (18" x 24" or larger works best)**

- Source image of another artist's work, printed or high-quality digital
- X-acto #1 knife**
- Prohibited supplies: power tools, torches, spray paint, encaustic, turpentine, resin, plastisol, any solvent that isn’t low VOC

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

In our effort to foster a stronger sense of community and accessibility at Anderson Ranch, we include the welcome dinner and all lunches as part of the tuition for summer workshop students. Our hope is that this adjustment will encourage all students to come together to share meals and engage in meaningful conversations. Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Level IV
Students have advanced skill and knowledge of painting and drawing. Students are highly motivated and self-directed, have a minimum of five years experience in their field and have multiple portfolios of their artwork. Portfolio review is required for admittance to some Level IV classes.

Advanced Mentored Studies: Topics in Painting: Studio Practice and Critique

This three-year advanced mentorship program encourages students to push their studio practice. Working at a rigorous pace, engaging in critical dialogue with the group and with the instructors in individual critique, artists refine and expand their investigations. Wide-ranging topics include concept and approach to contemporary art practice as well as technical and material explorations. Students are expected to work independently with the support of their class peers and instructors, raising the ambition of their own studio goals. Although primarily a painting workshop, participation by installation artists and other artists working across media is encouraged. The goal of the series is for students to gain community, develop insight into their work and, through discussion, challenge themselves to reflect on their artistic intentions. 2025 is the first year of this three-year intensive program. In the subsequent two years of the program, the cohort meets in-person at Anderson Ranch from August 10th - 14th, 2026 and August 16th - 20th, 2027. Over the course of the program, there are group and one-on-one meetings via Zoom in March and October of each year. The final meeting is via Zoom in October 2027. Tuition listed is the program cost per year. TO APPLY: Applications for enrollment are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, please fill out the 2025 Advanced Mentored Studies Online Application Form. This is a rolling application with a priority deadline of Monday, February 3rd.

Mixed Media Acrylic Painting: Material Experimentation

Using various collage and painting techniques, students engage in exploratory exercises to develop unique frameworks for gameplay as a method of creation. Through inspirational slideshows featuring contemporary and historical artists, material demonstrations and response to the unique location of Anderson Ranch, participants dive into rigorous play and experimentation with color, form, and various collage and painting techniques. These include stencil work, cut paper sketching, acrylic paint transfers, drawing media, and gel mediums suitable for collage on stretched canvas. Personalized strategies and responses encourage improvisation, chance, and spontaneity, opening new pathways within the student’s creative process. Paint-friendly collage material and other activity-specific materials are provided.

Students have some formal training in digital fabrication, experience with a variety of materials and fabrication processes, and know how to use CNC, 3-D printers, or laser cutters competently and safely. Students have a portfolio of their work.

Master Class: Career Momentum: Professional Practices for Artists

Artists at all stages of their careers often wish they could have more guidance when approaching galleries, making sales, navigating and choosing exhibitions in which to participate, and even writing off sales and donations. This nuts-and-bolts workshop gets to the core of these questions, while at the same time mentoring artists to consider their goals within the art world and find the tools to achieve them. Every artist has a different trajectory, but there are many common struggles and questions along the way, several of which form the content of this course designed to inform, energize, and empower. This workshop takes place in the painting building but invites artists of all disciplines to apply.
