From Plein-Air to the Studio: Landscape and Figure

Jun 30 - Jul 4, 2025

9AM-5PM

Concept

Explore today’s challenges in painting through observational exploration merged with abstract gestures and material experimentation. This exciting workshop takes place both outside and in the painting classroom. Students focus on smaller works outdoors, then enter the studio to translate them into larger works as they incorporate abstraction and color theory as well as various acrylic painting techniques. Students also get the chance to explore the figure and its place within the pictorial landscape by working from a live model. The focus is primarily live observation, with an exploratory approach to the practice of painting through material experimentation and dyeing of canvas as ways to build space and richness.

Media & Techniques

Acrylic painting, plein-air painting, painting from a live model, canvas dyeing

Faculty

Esteban Cabeza de Baca & Heidi Howard

Esteban Cabeza de Baca and Heidi Howard have been collaborating for the past ten years. Both of their practices stem from the tradition of painting and delve into humanity’s most pressing concerns. Their site-specific installations question conventions of painting, authorship, gender, race, growth and humanity. Howard’s work stems from the practice of portraiture. They were born, raised, and currently live in Queens, NY. Their first monograph “Colors make us do vibrant deeds!” was published by Phoebe Press. Cabeza de Baca was born along the US Mexico border of San Ysidro, CA and grew up in west Denver, CO in the Chicano community. Cabeza de Baca’s work is in numerous collections including Harvard University, MCA San Diego, Parrish Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Tia Collection, and Williams College Museum of Art.

Painting and Photography: An Archaeological Approach to Text and Image

Kate Leonard

Tuition $2,440
Code JANSTU2026P

Two art forms collide in this fascinating look at the intersection of photography and painting. Join us for an engaging exploration of the artistic synthesis between these two distinct art forms. Discover new transfer techniques that integrate photographic images and text directly onto painted surfaces. Using traditional collage and photomontage, master new methods that allow for opaque and translucent layers. Reductive methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an archaeological approach to image development. We begin each morning with a technical demonstration illustrated with visual examples from contemporary art. A range of integrated photographic painting approaches will be introduced on paper, canvas and panels in acrylic. By midweek, our investigations continue to larger artworks tailored to each student.

Advanced Mentored Studies: Topics in Painting: Studio Practice and Critique

Holly Hughes, Stephen Westfall

Tuition $2,600
Code D1122-26

The second year of this three-year advanced mentorship program encourages each student to push their studio practice. Working at a rigorous pace, engaging in critical dialogue with the group and with the instructors in individual critique, artists refine and expand their investigations. Wide-ranging topics include concept and approach to contemporary art practice as well as technical and material explorations. Students are expected to work independently with the support of their class peers and instructors, raising the ambition of their own studio goals. Although primarily a painting workshop, participation by installation artists and other artists working across media is encouraged. The goal of the series is for students to gain community, develop insight into their work and, through discussion, challenge themselves to reflect on their artistic intentions.
