Concept
Artists at all stages of their careers often wish they could have more guidance when approaching galleries, making sales, navigating and choosing exhibitions in which to participate, and even writing off sales and donations. This nuts-and-bolts workshop gets to the core of these questions, while at the same time mentoring artists to consider their goals within the art world and find the tools to achieve them. Every artist has a different trajectory, but there are many common struggles and questions along the way, several of which form the content of this course designed to inform, energize, and empower. This workshop takes place in the painting building but invites artists of all disciplines to apply.

Jasmine Wahi
Jasmine Wahi is the founder and co-director of Project for Empty Space, a nonprofit organization in New York City and Newark, NJ. Her multifaceted curatorial practice predominantly focuses on issues of femme empowerment, complicating binary structures within social discourses, and exploring multi-positional cultural identities through the lens of intersectional feminism. In 2023, she was honored by The Metropolitan Museum of Art for exemplary social impact work. In 2020, Wahi became the inaugural Holly Block Social Justice Curator at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Painting & Drawing
Make, reflect, consider, engage—these are all critical elements of the Painting and Drawing workshops at Anderson Ranch. Our exceptional workshops combine focused, hands-on art making with critical feedback for artists of all levels. Painting and Drawing guest faculty are phenomenal artists and educators with experience supporting students by offering technical knowledge and encouragement.
The bright, natural light of the Wyly Painting and Drawing Building provides an inspiring environment where students can explore and expand their artistic practice. Our facilities are equipped with individual worktables, wall space, easels, rolling palettes, odorless solvents, a wide range of hand tools, computer access with Adobe software, wifi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities. Spend a week here— or several—and engage in a variety of activities that will fuel your practice throughout the year.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

New Media students have a basic understanding of video, multimedia or animation software. Students have basic computer skills and are comfortable using a Macintosh computer.

Photography students have some formal training and significant experience making, capturing and digitally processing images using Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop. New Media students have some formal training in conceptual and technological aspects of video, multimedia, coding or animation and are versed in the appropriate software applications. Impressions on Clay: Merging Photography, Painting, and Ceramics

In a contemporary art world where "mixed media" is increasingly prominent, exploring the development of 2D imagery for 3D forms is a timely approach in ceramics. This immersive workshop delves into the intersection of photography, screen printing, and ceramics, encouraging students to merge and expand these mediums in innovative ways. With a focus on narrative development, participants work with personal, found, or generated images to create visual stories. Emphasizing the conceptual development of photographic imagery and pictorial illustrations, students design and produce screen-printed decals for transferring onto fired ceramic surfaces. During their studio experience, students are welcome to hand build day one and then focus on image preparation and design and transfer. This workshop provides artists with the tools to seamlessly integrate 2D and 3D elements in their work.

The Indifferent Landscape

This mixed media workshop focuses on landscape with an emphasis on incorporating the figure into the landscape narrative using ink, paint, drawing materials, and sketchbooks. The class heads outdoors for at least two of the workshop days, then returns to the classroom to continue to work and discuss the figure, composition, and landscape in depth, striving to create an artistic discourse that is clear, authentic, and earnest. Students engage as a group and in one-on-one conversations and are encouraged to explore the historical and cultural context from which their work emerges. Emphasis is on creating with the confidence to make the work that compels students to take possession of their ideas and follow their obsessions.

Abstracting Reality

In this acrylic painting workshop, the mysterious and powerful realm of abstraction—and how it can be used as a visual tool when merged with representationalism—becomes accessible. We delve into the basic visual elements of abstraction through the exploration of pattern, color, composition, and fragmentation. Advanced students are encouraged to experiment with surface texture and alternative painting materials as well, and to incorporate representational elements such as photographs and figurative painting. These dynamic combinations result in bold and exciting images that use abstraction as a device to interrupt reality and present it in unique and surprising ways.
