Concept
Designed for the monotype-curious, this workshop explores an alternative approach to making unique, one-of-a-kind prints using the vocabulary of drawing, hard edges, transparency, and layered passages of color. We create complex, engaging works that can stand on their own or initiate collages, mixed media works, and printstallation. Enjoy printing both by hand and on the press, working intuitively or intentionally, to develop a body of related works on Asian paper. Demonstrations include trace monotype, stencil printing, counter-proofing, ghost printing, ink modification, seamless flats, and smooth blend rolls.
Media & Techniques

Layering Color and Light: Woodcut and Monoprint
Jean Gumpper
Tuition $1,345
Code R0404-25
This rigorous, engaging printmaking workshop focuses on monoprint and woodcut methods with an emphasis on layering color to produce luminous results. We begin with observational studies from the natural world, and explore trace, stencil, painterly, and multiple plate monotype methods. Woodcut techniques are then added to layer transparent and opaque color to create a radiant sense of space. We make both editioned and unique prints, alternating between structure and improvisation. This back-and-forth serves as the format for the course as we combine printing using a woodcut matrix with a variety of monoprint methods.

Jean Gumpper
Tuition $1,345
Code R0505-25
This rigorous, engaging, printmaking workshop combines monoprint and woodcut processes with a digital component. We incorporate laser-cut stencils and wood blocks together with painterly and carved marks to create images. We begin with observational studies from the natural world and explore multiple plate monotype methods. Woodcut techniques including laser-cut blocks are then added to layer transparent and opaque color. We make both editioned and unique prints, alternating between structure and improvisation. Master Class: Innovations in Lithography
Brian Shure, Valpuri Remling
Tuition $1,345
Code R0706-25
In this workshop, advanced printmakers explore photographic and hand-drawn imagery with film positives on pre-sensitized photo plates as well as direct mark making on ball-grained aluminum plates. Prior background in lithography or extensive work in other printmaking media is the foundation for exploration of image preparation, plate processing, and printing techniques to develop an understanding of efficient methods for production of consistent lithographic editions. *This workshop does not require that students be proficient in lithography, but they must have significant experience in the field of printmaking.
