Concept
The embodiment of human expression and mimicry, marionettes have historically captivated the imagination through their theatrical and allegorical power. This workshop guides participants through the process of designing, constructing, and presenting a marionette doll using personal stories and a variety of materials and processes such as wood, metal, 3D printing, and found objects.

Faculty
Russell Hamilton
Russell Hamilton holds an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Washington, Seattle. He was an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1990 and 2021. His work has been shown in the US, Asia, and the Middle East. He is currently an associate professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

At Anderson Ranch, our sculpture program offers a vibrant spectrum of workshops that reflect a variety of studio practices. At the confluence of tradition and technology, these programs are material and technique-rich, ranging from classical metal fabrication to experimental digital production.
Students work in communal and interactive studios designed for all levels of experience, supporting traditional and nontraditional methods. The sculpture studios are fully equipped with advanced machinery and offer additional outdoor covered workspace.
Our renowned sculpture faculty work closely with students through critical discussions, material demonstrations and individual assistance. Instructors encourage exploration and experimentation, emphasizing process and idea development. We complement this with a focus on process and sound construction. You leave with far more than finished pieces—you walk away with the tools and inspiration required to elevate your studio practice.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Rock Solid: Concrete & Mixed Media Sculpture

In this workshop, Tortora demonstrates various ways to incorporate concrete in mixed media sculpture using constructive, modeling, and basic casting approaches. We discuss how to use concrete to redistribute weight and visually defy gravity; anchoring into concrete for stable joinery; techniques for modeling concrete onto wood, foam, or other substrates; and using everyday materials like clay, cardboard, or plywood to create basic intuitive molds to generate forms. Students experiment with different cement mixes for more lightweight or eco-friendly blends. Participants leave the workshop with a basic working knowledge and skill set that can be easily replicated with economical materials and workspace.

Students are new to sculpture and have no formal training.

Level II
Students have a basic knowledge of 3-D art making and sculpture concepts and are comfortable using a variety of hand and power tools. Students have taken one or two sculpture classes or workshops.

Level III
Students have experience with a variety of materials and fabrication techniques and know how to use hand and power tools competently and safely. Students are self-starting with some formal training in critical aspects of sculpture and have completed a portfolio of work. Students have taken a minimum of three classes or workshops.

CNC Relief Sculpture in Coated Foam

This versatile workshop combines high-tech processes with hands-on sculpting techniques to expand artists' toolboxes. Participants learn how to design polygonal forms in 3D software and strategies for digitally dissecting 3D forms into stackable reliefs. Students will cut these forms in foam using a CNC machine, and apply rigid coatings for a lightweight and durable sculpture.

Explorations in Kiln-Formed Glass and Ceramics

This two week workshop is a deep dive into ways of manipulating glass in the kiln, exploring techniques such as fusing, slumping, draping, and casting. Students use hand building techniques to create ceramic forms which are then combined with glass to create sculptural or functional work. Through experimentation, they learn the basic rules of kiln-formed glass, making discoveries along the way.
