The Architecture of Color
Jun 21 - 25, 2021
The way a painter uses color can be akin to the organic process of thinking. This workshop is for artists who use color as a way of navigating their material world. With an emphasis on the metaphorical, conceptual and even the poetic, this workshop is open to traditional painters as well as those in expanded media, including collage, installation, sculpture or performance. Topics are explored through informal critiques, one-on-one studio visits and group discussions informed by independent studio time. Artists should be able to work independently in the studio and ready to engage in active and open dialogue with other participants.
Please bring any painting material or medium you are comfortable working with. As with collage or installation, feel free to think in different or new ways.Supply List

Photographic Collage: A Painterly Approach
Join us for an engaging exploration of the artistic synthesis between two distinct art forms: photography and painting. The workshop takes a truly hybrid approach as it is designed for painters interested in incorporating photographic imagery and photographers interested in the physicality of painterly manipulation. Discover transfer techniques that integrate photographic images and text directly onto stained surfaces, resulting in intriguingly complex works. Using traditional collage combined with digital transfers to explore methods that allow for opaque and translucent layers. Reductive methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an archaeological approach to image development. While the workshop introduces a variety of techniques, emphasis is placed on the unique conceptual power of collage and montage imagery and end of week critiques refocus participants on the expressive and narrative elements of the artworks produced. While the workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels, students with some experience in digital photography workflow are able to maximize the variety of techniques explored in the workshop.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers
This class is based on Hornung’s textbook, Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers. It is designed to strengthen your color understanding and make you more confident with color in your studio practice. Under the instructor’s guidance, students make a sequence of practical studies that reveal the structure of color, its behavior in relation to other colors and useful color strategies. Class time is devoted to illustrated lectures, demonstrations, and the discussion of projects. The class meets on alternate days, so there is ample time to complete assignments. This course is an excellent choice for anyone who makes two-dimensional art.
