Concept
This workshop invites students to find the balance between spontaneity and control within the watercolor medium. We explore the evolution of abstract form from the observed reality of nature, with an emphasis on color palette. Each student completes a series of work that explores one central subject. This course focuses on the line, color, structure, and form in relation to natural objects. Various experimental techniques and tools that can be utilized to create a finished painting are demonstrated. Activities include presentations of visual images, discussions of abstract painting, and student-instructor consultations.
Media & Techniques

Faculty

Jan Heaton
Jan Heaton is a professional watercolor artist. Her paintings celebrate nature, and then abstractly reach beyond the obvious. Art dealers and galleries in Austin, San Francisco, San Antonio, and Atlanta represent her work. In the classroom, Heaton believes all students are individuals with their own story and library of inspiration. Her teaching methods are formed by her belief that everyone learns and makes art in their own way.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
New Approaches to Image-Making Through Painting, Printmaking, and Collage with Karen Lederer
Karen Lederer
Tuition $275
Code VFD4101-25
Rediscover your approach to image-making through this virtual, mixed-media painting class. Taking inspiration from artists throughout history and their diverse approaches to combining media, we then set up our own compositions, filling our paintings with meaning, wonder, pattern, form and color. The class focuses on experimenting with abstract mark-making as well as representational imagery. We explore various ways to utilize acrylic and delve into collage and printmaking techniques, such as pochoir, stencils, and trace monotype, to create new and surprising marks. PLEASE NOTE: This virtual workshop will be held live via Zoom on Monday and Thursday, October 6th and 9th, from 12-2PM MST. This workshop meets via Zoom Video Conferencing software (download free from Zoom.com). An Anderson Ranch staff member co-teaches the class and coordinates the online platform.
