Meet Artist-in-Residence Adam Linn

December 5, 2017

Tell us about your background.

I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA and I just graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Printmaking. I will be moving back to Pittsburgh after this residency to begin my fully fledged artist career (hopefully).

How did you find out about the Anderson Ranch Arts Center?

A previous printmaking resident who is also from Pittsburgh highly recommended the program to me.

What is your favorite part about the Anderson Ranch so far?

I love being able to focus on a cohesive body of work without worrying about any extraneous details in my life. The relaxed schedule here allows me to split my time between drawing and printmaking. Both processes inform each other so for me it is very beneficial to be able to do them in the same setting.

What inspires you to create art?

Recently I have been thinking a lot about specific movies I watched growing up that I felt helped me better understand and appreciate my sexual identity. “Girl gang” films like Charlie’s Angels, The Devil Wears Prada and Marie Antoinette (to name a few) mesmerized me with their flashy visual splendor and campy undertones. I have been reinterpreting these films with a cast of cat characters of my own creation to memorialize the impact these movies had on me.

How has your work evolved?

I have always loved the rigor of the process when it comes to printmaking and drawing. My work has become more personal as I have been looking back at my childhood and analyzing it from a different perspective. In merging my love for drawing and printmaking with a reexamination of personal queer icon films I am able to visualize a perverse world of cats in drag performing the roles of a lifetime.
