This class expands on the traditional methods of collage and explores new ways to visually express ideas. Using mixed-media—paper, photos and photo transfers, found materials, and fabrics—and an introduction to press-free printmaking techniques including stencils, pochoir, and basic transfer processes, we investigate ways to build up imagery and textures that elevate mixed-media materials. Students experiment with new techniques demonstrated daily in class and explore forms of expression that may challenge their previous working methods and expectations. Students work on quick studies as well as multi-day, deliberate projects that produce a personal visual vocabulary and strive toward more advanced, completed work.

Then, students focus on ways to challenge and enhance their artistic strengths by working on multi-day, deliberate projects that produce a personal visual vocabulary and strive toward more advanced, completed work.

This class explores the hybrid print through an extensive range of monoprinting techniques. We begin with traditional techniques, followed by the incorporation of gum transfers, inkjet transfers, and chine collé. Working with both hand-generated and photographic imagery results in dynamic, multilayered prints. Students are introduced to each technique as a single process procedure and then encouraged to investigate ways to combine the various methods into a composition. By embracing technical exploration and experimentation, the best of each technique can be emboldened by pairing with other processes. Students produce works that reflect a synthesis of process, layering, composition, and ideas.

Delve into an extensive range of printmaking techniques, exploring the hybrid print. Students incorporate basic intaglio techniques, gum transfers and chine collé. The results are dynamic, multilayered prints that allow for the best of each technique to be celebrated. Students work with both hand-generated and photographic imagery and embrace technical exploration and experimentation. The workshop introduces each technique as a single process procedure, then investigates ways to combine the methods to discover which print qualities are emboldened when combined in a single image. Students produce works that reflect a synthesis of process, layering, composition and ideas.
