Painting from Uncanny Source Material

Henri Paul Broyard

Tuition $1,195
Code D0408-23

This class approaches the process of creating tension between abstraction and representation by extracting compositions from unlikely source materials as a way to jumpstart your practice. Starting with an initial image, we physically crop, break down, stretch, and skew to create a composition that is unique and visually active. By pushing and pulling against the line between abstraction and representation, students find new access to sourcing images and content. Discussions highlight distortion, personal perspective, achieving surface tension, and creating visual space through shape, pattern, texture, and color relationships. Students create a small body of work throughout the week using acrylic and other water-based media on canvas and heavy-weight paper.
