Absolutely Abstract

Concept
Dive into the world of abstract art and become inspired by the colors, shapes, textures, and materials. Create vibrant watercolor prints, three-dimensional sculptures, oil pastel and paper collages, and so much more! We use unconventional materials to explore the likes of Helen Frankenthaler, Picasso, Joan Miro, Alma Woodsey Thomas among others. Our experiences, stories and feelings guide us to create our own personal touches on these absolutely artful abstractions!
Faculty
Hannah Baker
Hannah Baker is an artist and educator at Aspen Middle School. She originally from Northern Michigan, where she learned to be curious and aware of the space around her. She grew her artistic confidence in forests of towering hardwoods and pine trees that span miles of rolling hills. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and German and a minor in Museum Studies from the University of Michigan in 2018 and recently completed a Master of Arts in Teaching at Maryland Institute College of Art in May 2023. She began teaching in 2019, inspired by students’ strength in outdoor education, and wanted to incorporate those dispositions into her own classroom. She wants students to know their ideas have value, problem solve how to express these ideas, and understand the impact their creations have on others.Outside of teaching, she loves experimenting with her own art and baking delicious treats.

Workshop Details
Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritize the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.
The Ranch Café meal plan that is included with Room and Board fees strives to provide healthy, creative meals that will nourish your artistic creativity. The meal plan includes 5 days of continental breakfasts that will include a hot offering, 5 lunches with a selection of offerings, and 5 dinners.
Scholarships, College Credit & Discounts
Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Worldscapes

Let's build an imaginary world together! With the help of friends, we create houses, skyscrapers, planes, trains and so much more! In this workshop, we learn about different types of architecture and design styles and incorporate those into our own creations. We use mixed-media materials to bring our worlds together, like cardboard, paint, clay, foam, and glue to make a city filled with whatever they can imagine! Whether your world is in the deep of the ocean, on the moon in space, or in the green aspen trees,get ready to plan, design, and build!

Adventures in Animation

This workshop explores storytelling techniques through the worlds of animation and stop motion. Students produce their own movies using the playful art of stop-motion animation, creating sets and characters with a variety of material resources. The second half of the week is devoted to the emerging field of interactive animation. Students learn how to write processing code to create digital animations that can actually react to their surroundings.
