Molding Myths: Legends in Clay

Concept
Step into a world where legends come alive and creativity knows no limits! In this exciting workshop, young artists explore mythical tales from around the globe and bring them to life through hands-on art-making. For the first two days, kids dive into the basics of clay sculpting, molding expressive figures and creatures inspired by stories of legendary heroes, gods, and magical beings. As the week unfolds, we expand our materials to include papier mâché, paint, and found objects, allowing students to craft larger-than-life elements from these myths. By the end of the week, each child creates a collection of vibrant artworks inspired by tales from Ancient Greece, Native American traditions, Oceania, and more. Join us as we transform ancient stories into captivating works of art!

Emily Katebini
Children’s and Community Engagement Program Coordinator
Emily is the Children’s and Community Engagement Program Coordinator of the Anderson Ranch. Emily earned a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado, and an M.A. in Intellectual Disabilities and Autism in Elementary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. With a distinguished career as a New York City educator, she earned the 2022 New York Literacy Outreach Award for her significant contributions to improving literacy outcomes across the city. Prior to joining the Anderson Ranch, Emily served as the Director of Special Education and Giftedness at a K-12 school.

Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Play, Paint, Score!

Get ready to move, create, and play like a champion! In this high-energy workshop, kids dive into the world of sports and athletics—through art. They design bold, colorful team flags, decorate mini footballs and baseballs, and even craft tennis racquets from cardboard and string. Young makers build tiny skis and snowboards for action-figure races, splash paint across swimming scenes, and create mixed-media collages inspired by running, biking, and triathlons. Golf gets a fun twist too, with painted putting greens and brightly patterned golf balls that are as playful as they are artistic. This workshop is all about imagination in motion—where kids can combine creativity with their favorite sports, experiment with new materials, and leave with a collection of one-of-a-kind athletic art!

Art in the Wild: Nature's Colors and Patterns

Discover the magic of the colors, textures, and patterns all around us as we create amazing works of art with natural materials! We explore nature’s chemistry by grinding pigments to paint with, layering landscapes into vibrant collages, transforming dried flowers into glowing sun catchers, and dyeing fabrics with botanical sun prints. Along the way, children find inspiration in Andy Goldsworthy’s stunning nature sculptures and Yayoi Kusama’s fantastical mushrooms. At the end of the week, we celebrate our creations in a student art show, sharing the rich colors, patterns, and wonders of nature that we captured in our art.

Body Magic: Art in Motion

Discover how amazing our bodies are through art! Each day, we celebrate a new way our bodies move, feel, and express. We stretch and trace our outlines to create life-sized portraits, stamp handprints and footprints into colorful patterns, build clay models inspired by our bones, and paint swirling shapes that capture the energy of dance and play. We explore textures to spark our senses and create faces that show big feelings. Throughout the week, we use drawing, painting, and sculpture to see ourselves in exciting new ways—inside and out. At the end of the class, every child proudly shares artworks that celebrate the wonder of being uniquely them!
