Concept

Nurture passion for photography through an atmosphere of exploration, practice and play in this dynamic workshop. Students examine how great photographs engage us visually, emotionally and intellectually. Improve image-making abilities by focusing on both the technical aspects of a photograph and the ideas behind it. Participants work on storytelling, capturing the environment and digital image creation using Adobe Photoshop. Techniques to take better and more unique photos are discussed. Students learn to edit in Adobe Photoshop, retouch photos and discover ways to combine, blend and mix photographs together as well as view and discuss important photographs from the past and present.

Faculty

Stephanie Lindsey

Stephanie Lindsey’s work is derived from life experiences and a keen interest in how and when culture, life, and identity intersect. Her explorations have resulted in a series of complex narrative photographs, videos, installations, and mixed-media works that focus on issues of place, family, race and identity in American society. She maps the intricate inner weavings of integration of culture, physical, and psychological space through her work.

Painting and Photography: An Archaeological Approach to Text and Image

Kate Leonard

Tuition $2,440
Code JANSTU2026P

Two art forms collide in this fascinating look at the intersection of photography and painting. Join us for an engaging exploration of the artistic synthesis between these two distinct art forms. Discover new transfer techniques that integrate photographic images and text directly onto painted surfaces. Using traditional collage and photomontage, master new methods that allow for opaque and translucent layers. Reductive methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an archaeological approach to image development. We begin each morning with a technical demonstration illustrated with visual examples from contemporary art. A range of integrated photographic painting approaches will be introduced on paper, canvas and panels in acrylic. By midweek, our investigations continue to larger artworks tailored to each student.
