The Brutal and the Delicate: Steel Combined with Soft Materials

Concept
Throughout art history, steel is a material commonly associated with industry, violence, and strength. This workshop challenges such connections by investigating ways that steel can become visually delicate, and by inventing new meanings and visual relationships through combining steel with materials with opposite characteristics. Exercises address technical and creative inquiries regarding how steel is cut, shaped, and physically joined, and how to challenge material assumptions if steel becomes a secondary, rather than primary, compositional element. We explore the aesthetic and technical consequences of combining steel with soft, vulnerable, contradictory, and unexpected materials.

Carl Reed
Carl Reed is a sculptor and professor emeritus at Colorado College. His sculpture ranges from gallery-scaled pieces to large, site-specific public projects. He is particularly interested in the expressive capacity of materials and often combines stone, wood, metal, and concrete. His work has been exhibited nationally and in Sweden.

At Anderson Ranch, our sculpture program offers a vibrant spectrum of workshops that reflect a variety of studio practices. At the confluence of tradition and technology, these programs are material and technique-rich, ranging from classical metal fabrication to experimental digital production.
Students work in communal and interactive studios designed for all levels of experience, supporting traditional and nontraditional methods. The sculpture studios are fully equipped with advanced machinery and offer additional outdoor covered workspace.
Our renowned sculpture faculty work closely with students through critical discussions, material demonstrations and individual assistance. Instructors encourage exploration and experimentation, emphasizing process and idea development. We complement this with a focus on process and sound construction. You leave with far more than finished pieces—you walk away with the tools and inspiration required to elevate your studio practice.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

In our effort to foster a stronger sense of community and accessibility at Anderson Ranch, we include the welcome dinner and all lunches as part of the tuition for summer workshop students. Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Liquid Enamel for Dimensional Forms

Explore the sculptural potential of ultra-thin copper and vibrant liquid enamel in this dynamic workshop led by 2024 United States Artist Fellow, Tanya Crane. Known for her innovative use of traditional jewelry-making techniques such as metalworking and enameling, Tanya shares how these processes can extend beyond jewelry to inspire broader creative applications. The material’s ability to quickly transform into light, dynamic three-dimensional forms makes it ideal for experimenting with the enameling process. After an exploration of sheet manipulation, the instructor will demonstrate how various enamels can be used to create a base coat to build upon or as stand-alone elements that create interesting textures and color combinations.

Sculptural Paper Casting

In this foundational paper-making workshop, students transform pulp into unique cast-paper sculptures. Starting with dry abaca pulp, we dive into the process of reconstituting, blending, dying, and casting sheets with a traditional mold and deckle. Abaca paper is characterized by long fibers with impressive wet strength, making it ideal for manipulation. We mold the wet sheets onto objects from home, around the studio, or in the environment. Sewing and gluing aid in combining dried paper objects into small-scale sculptural creations.

Sculptural Paintings

Create a dynamic sense of wall power by pushing two-dimensional painting onto three-dimensional surfaces. Incorporate physical elements, painting on a variety of substrates and collage to develop a sense of physicality, space, and texture. Painters and sculptors alike are invited to delve into the painterly world of stepping outside of the rectangular picture plane to incorporate found objects and alternative painting surfaces while maintaining painting as the primary medium. Lectures include an exploration of artists who make sculptural paintings, and discussion centers on how a painting changes when the focus shifts to painting as object.
