Michael Fortune

DATES: July 20 – 31, 2015

SKILL LEVEL: II – IV

CONCEPT: Come explore bench and table forms: from classical to contemporary, from frivolous to functional, from light to leviathan. This workshop combines traditional joinery techniques with innovative woodforming processes, including both steam and hot-pipe bending. A chosen project may use different materials and upholstery techniques, or even incorporate storage space, secret compartments and lighting. Bring original ideas and an open mind, and prepare to be inspired.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will work with kilnand air-dried lumber, hand and power tools, traditional woodworking methods, steam bending, laminating, vacuum forming and hot pipe bending.

ACTIVITIES: We learn through hands-on demonstrations, slide lectures and presentations and informal discussions led by the instructor. Students follow a step-by-step sequence of thumbnail sketches, scale models, full-size drawings, a mock-up and finally, the construction of a table or bench.

FACULTY: Michael Fortune has designed and made furniture since 1975 for private residences across North America. He received the prestigious Bronfman Award in 1993, was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2000, and received the 2007 Award of Distinction from the Furniture Society. www.michaelfortune.com
