Meet Artist-in-Residence Anthony Akinbola

November 16, 2017

Tell us about your background.
I’m a Nigerian-American artist.  I was born in Columbia, Missouri and at the age of 12 I moved to Lagos, Nigeria with my family where I attended secondary school before coming back to the states.

How did you find out about the Anderson Ranch Arts Center?
A friend and mentor, Stan Squirewell, told me about the residency which he attended last year.

What is your favorite part about the Anderson Ranch so far?
The access to different processes of making work and being able to meet and converse with other artists.

What inspires you to create art?
I’m thinking a lot about my identity and my environment so there’s a lot of self-discovery that transitions to physical form.

How has your work evolved?
The work has gotten more personal, before I felt like I was forced to cater my art to a specific subject matter, but as I’ve continued to make work I’ve started to look at the more personal aspects of my life.
