FREE and open to the public
The Photography Salon welcomes all who have an interest in photography and lens-based media regardless of their level of expertise. We further our understanding of photography as a visual language and art form through photographic presentations, discussions and portfolio reviews. This month we welcome Kyra Schmidt. We invite you to join us!
Born in Indiana, Kyra Schmidt is a visual artist currently based in Roanoke, Virginia. She received her Bachelors at the University of Southern Indiana, and her MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Kyra works at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University and is an editorial assistant for Aint-Bad Magazine.
Kyra’s artistic research currently examines how we represent or see the world through image, text, and technology. Through an exploration of old, new, and alternative methods, she attempts to transcribe the space between the sensation of being-in-the-world and our physical representations of it. Her work is rooted in an interest in the ontology of the photographic medium and in the philosophy of aesthetics, often grappling with the discontinuity between image, text, meaning and physical experience.
Kyra has exhibited nationally and internationally including: The House of Lucie in Los Angelas, CA, Candela Gallery in Richmond, VA, Edition One in Santa Fe, NM, Gallery 621 in Tallahassee, FL, at the Lushui Photography Festival in Lishui, China and more. Her work as been published in Aint-Bad Magazine, BETA Developments in Photography, Etapes Magazine, and as a 2017 Top 50 Photographer by Critical Mass. Kyra will be publishing a handmade, limited edition monograph with Dust Collective in the Fall 2019.
