This rigorous Critical Dialog program is open to practicing artists who want to take their work and careers to a new level with a unique opportunity to engage with Alex Israel, artist; Bettina Korek, arts advocate and writer; and Hans Ulrich Obrist, museum director and curator. This course combines lectures, discussions, readings, writing prompts and individual and group critiques to guide students deeper into the concepts behind their work and their agency in the contemporary art world. In relation to the increased importance of curatorial practices in contemporary art exhibitions and collecting, participants discover new modes of working and a greater understanding of the genesis of the professional artist.
Artists are asked to bring a digital portfolio of their work to class.
PORTFOLIO REVIEW REQUIRED: In order to conduct the required portfolio review, we will need to see digital images of your work in one single PDF (as opposed to individual JPG attachments) sent directly to Anderson Ranch Studio Coordinator, Lauren Peterson, via email at email@example.com. Please include 10 images of 10 works. Additionally, please include an image identification list that includes: title, media, dimensions and year. While not required, it is helpful to see an artist statement addressing the images you send. Lastly, please provide a phone number where you can be reached and a link to your website. These materials must be submitted as a single PDF (less than 10 MB) to be considered.
Please include “Critical Dialog Portfolio Review” in the subject line of your email. Submissions that do not follow the requested directions will not be reviewed. To be considered, Lauren Peterson must receive portfolios by Friday, March 15, 2019. We will email you regarding your status on or before Friday, March 22, 2019. If you are accepted, a deposit of $500 will be required within one week of notification of acceptance to hold your place. Housing will be assigned on a space-available basis upon enrollment.

Bettina Korek is founder of ForYourArt, a Los Angeles-based organization that produces projects with artists, promotes information about exhibitions and events, and works with diverse stakeholders—from artists and institutions to civic entities and brands—to encourage new forms of patronage, engagement and collaboration. ForYourArt’s role as liaison connecting different corners of the art world inspired artist John Baldessari to describe the organization as “special and unique because it is a neutral space.” Each week, ForYourArt publishes a trusted free art guide to Los Angeles. Korek organized the Participating Gallery program for the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative and is currently the executive director of Frieze Los Angeles, the past President of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and served on the Board of Governors of the Natural History Museum from 2005-2009. She is also the special projects editor at Surface magazine.
Alex Israel lives and works in Los Angeles. Deeply entwined with his hometown, his work explores popular media, Hollywood, and the cult of celebrity, while positing LA as central to an understanding of American culture and the American dream. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at: Le Consortium, Dijon; The Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California; and the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo. His work is included in numerous museum collections worldwide including: MoMA, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Israel is the founder and CEO of Freeway Eyewear, Inc., and his first feature length film, SPF-18, is available on both iTunes and Netflix.
Hans Ulrich Obrist is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show “World Soup” (The Kitchen Show) in 1991 he has curated more than 300 shows. In 2013, Obrist co-founded with Simon Castets the 89plus, a long-term, international, multi-platform research project, conceived as a mapping of the digitally native generation born in or after 1989. In 2011 Obrist received the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence, in 2009 he was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and in 2015 he received the International Folkwang Prize for his commitment to the arts. Obrist has lectured internationally at academic and art institutions, and is contributing editor to several magazines and journals. Obrist’s recent publications include Conversations in Colombia, Ways of Curating, The Age of Earthquakes with Douglas Coupland and Shumon Basar, and Lives of The Artists, Lives of The Architects.
