Clay has been around for thousands of years and is the most human of all materials. This course examines historical ceramic practices to inspire contemporary clay pieces. The workshop explores artifacts and rituals to expand dialog and context as well as provoke new ideas. Using the coil, pinch, paddle and reduction methods of working, students explore lively forms with new ways of seeing and making, including a focus on the vessel as well as smaller intimate objects for a “pit fire”. Students also learn how to make and apply Terra Sigillata on the surface of their creations.
