In this insight-filled course, students hone their voice and vision in their paintings through prompts, drawings, and discussions. Students are asked to push their painting vocabulary, find new forms or subjects to deepen, and consider perspectives that collide in nontraditional ways by exploring the art history of the West and East. The meeting of drawing and painting is part of this conversation—where one makes sense of a line, obscures it, or embraces it. Formal issues like color, composition, scale, texture, line quality and figure/ground are emphasized. Artists aim to complete three to five finished drawings and two to three paintings during the week.
