This rigorous painting workshop involves making many paintings and engaging in dialog and critiques. Emphasis is placed on the clarity of the artist’s intention, keeping in mind that painting as a medium and field is a specific language and semiotic system. In addition to signifiers within the painting itself, it exists within a larger, post-medium, expanded field of art with different sets of contexts and criteria. This workshop examines the present conversation between artists within contemporary painting as well as its relationship to other current art critical trends and pressures. Topics examined include digital culture, feminism, critique of capitalism, photorealism, and appropriation.
