In this workshop, artists eager to elevate their practice are invited to explore the art of collage by experimenting with various materials on flat surfaces. Participants go beyond simply gluing paper onto substrates; they engage in building dynamic surfaces that reflect a spirit of experimentation and risk-taking. Utilizing a diverse range of materials including photographs, paint, text, contact paper, parchment paper, and joint compound, participants discover new methods of transferring elements from one surface to another. The resulting collages not only culminate in finished images but also serve as gateways to unlocking the unconscious creative process. This workshop introduces students to expressive painting techniques, using abstraction as a foundation for collage. Emphasizing spontaneity, students will learn to relinquish preconceptions about paint application, allowing the medium to guide the creative process and reveal unexpected surfaces and textures. Once their abstract paintings are complete, students will explore various collage techniques, incorporating personal photographs, found materials, prints, drawings, and other adherable elements. The abstract paintings will serve as the foundation, influencing the composition and direction of the collages. Techniques covered in this workshop include polymer transfers, water-based paint applications, proper adhesion methods, contact paper transfers, the integration of joint compound, and strategies for composing and constructing layered images. Students who are already familiar with collage techniques take a deeper dive into the world of combining different media in this class. Painting and the different applications of paint are a big part of the workshop, as is using water based paint and joint compound to form substrates that form the foundation of the collages to come. By learning new and different techniques of applying media, we expand their knowledge of building a collage. Students are encouraged to print their own photographic images, and to use materials they have previously created such as drawings, watercolors, and prints. Correct adhesion and final finishing of the collages are taught, as well as editing for the final image. Experimentation and risk taking are encouraged.

Students learn how to build a collage using their own abstract paintings as a foundation for the different materials they use to build their images. They start by learning to paint expressively, creating a surface that they can then begin to make their images on, combining found materials with their own photographs to build unique mixed media works. In the process students learn not only different painting techniques, but how to do transfers and how to correctly adhere different materials onto their substrates. They are encouraged to use their own drawings, photographs, and prints or just about any collage material they can come up with.

In this workshop, students begin with experimentations in painting substrates using a variety of methods (mostly) without brushes, involving paint peels, drywall mud, pouring and scraping techniques, stencils, contact paper, and more. These surfaces become the foundation of the final collages, creating unique imagery with multiple photographic transfer methods. Participants are encouraged to use their own source material combined with found imagery. Faculty will facilitate group discussions as well as one-on-one time for further development of each student's work.
